NOTE: they're asking for a paper too.

attached mail follows:

Dear Alan,
I would like to invite you to attend the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) workshop on developing requirements for a common data format for electronic voting systems, on October 29 and 30, 2009. This workshop will be held at the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The goal of this two-day workshop is to identify and agree upon a set of requirements for a common data format for electronic voting systems. While there have been many calls for a common data format for voting systems, there is little consensus on the requirements for this format or what it is to accomplish. Possible goals for a common data format include interoperability of different equipment, auditability, transparency, publishing (communication with consumers of election data, such as media outlets), integration between polls and registration, transitioning to electronic record-keeping, or the ability just to "get the data out," by any means possible.
This workshop aims to (a) begin a discussion on the above issues among experts in the election community who would work with a common data format, including election officials, auditors, manufacturers, testing labs, and others involved in election analysis, and (b) arrive at basic scoping for what a common data format is to accomplish and the basic requirements for what it must do. Discussions during the workshop will address the following:

* The current state and uses of common data formats;

* "The customer"-existing and potential;

* The customer's goals-what data needs to be encoded in the format and how will it be used;

* Next steps towards a common data format;

* Willing contributors.
Your attendance at the workshop would be very meaningful and I am hoping that you would consider developing a paper to present. The workshop announcement and further information is located at http://vote.nist.gov/CDF-WorkshopCallForPapers.htm. We will be posting more information as the workshop date grows closer.
We have a block of hotel rooms reserved at a lower government rate at the local Holiday Inn, 301- 948-8900. In order to receive the government rate, rooms must be booked within the "NIST/Common Data Format Workshop" block, no later than October 14, 2009. For any further information on the technical aspects of the workshop, please feel free to contact me at john.wack@nist.gov<mailto:john.wack@nist.gov>, or 301-975-3411. For information about workshop logistics, registration, or for any other questions, please contact Karen Yavetz at karen.yavetz@nist.gov<mailto:karen.yavetz@nist.gov>, or 301-975-8498.
