Maybe something like this then?

    <election minVotes="0" maxVotes="1" ordered="No" coupled="Yes" name="Presidency">
      <selection party="Green" name="President">Rachel Carson</selection>
      <selection party="Green" name="Vice President">John Muir</selection>
    </election>

I have added the attribute "coupled" to the election element, and
"name" to selection (I also changed the value of "name" in election
to "Presidency", since that sounded to me like something that could
encompass both).

I have used all changes I suggested, and your element barcodedata,
in my script. It will be quite simple to change if it would be
modified in some way.
