One can use Ghostscript (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html)
as a filter to print postscript on non-postscript printers. I even
believe this is standard when installing a printer under Linux.
There is a GPL version of Ghostscript available.

If postscript is okay, maybe the printed ballot should be made
entirely in postscript, at least for the demo? Or has somebody
already done this? Otherwise, I can make a postscript version of
it - I handcode postscript all the time. For the demo, I suppose
it would be sufficient to only support iso-8859-1 (contains most
western European language characters), and ignore problems like
text overflow caused by too many selections, very long names etc?
