OVC at LinuxWorld 2008

Particularly at

1:25 (one minute, 25 seconds into video) shows totals incrementing on
screen simultaneously. For example, previous total (Let's say 23),
increment (displays 23+1 briefly), new total (displays 24).

2:23 shows scanning using an off-the-shelf handheld scanner, with
error detection in case a ballot is scanned twice.

5:15 final tabulation, aggregating periodic earlier totals. One person
reads out the vote totals for the candidates, and another scans the
code on the paper. Everybody can see the totals increase on the
screen, again with the increment displayed briefly for each. We would
not do periodic totals in a real election, in accordance with the law.
However, the process demonstrated is the same as entering data from
each polling place to get aggregate totals.

We can discuss whether observing tabulation at polling places or all
at central sites is better for public confidence. We can, of course,
do both.

Let us know if you have any other questions about the demo.
