I'm perfectly happy to declare the demo assumes SUSE (version ?). I've
had good experiences with that distro (though not any super-recent
version). And if we just state one distro/version, we can avoid any
unexpected library clashes and the like.

Ideally, I think the best thing is to use a customized Knoppix that
already has all the relevant libraries, and desktop links for our apps.
But given how close we are, I don't want to undertake the learning curve
for customizing Knoppix.

Btw. For those who don't know, Knoppix is the most popular "live CD"
Linux distribution. You can boot directly from CD into a working Linux
system, complete with a pretty KDE desktop. Other customizers of
Knoppix are projects like BioKnoppix, which bundle a bunch of
biological-science related applications into the CD (maybe by discarding
other general-purpose apps, e.g. games). Actually, with the Novell
acquisition, I guess SUSE is aiming for a similar live CD.

Ideally, our own custom EVMix would boot to a desktop with icons
for GUI, VII, BRP, etc. Probably we'd remove all the general-purpose
office apps. This approach eliminates worries about making sure the
right support chain is installed at precints (it's all bootable on that
CD). We'd have to work out a few details like where the XML ballots get
stored, but ideally we could use a diskless workstation in the future
(write-only storage might be on a RAM disk, or a floppy, or a USB dongle).

But that's a little bit later.

Yours, David...
