We will use very inexpensive barcode scanners for the demo. I bought 18 of
them on eBay for $11.50 (around $20 including shipping). They needed some
modification to output plain text--I killed two in the process. I have one
left. I gave out the rest of them.

If you would like to have one to test with, you might want to buy one from
eBay. In ones or twos, they can be had for around $8 ea (these plug into
the keyboard port). Here's an example of one--already modified--that went
for $1.00 (plus $5.95 S&H):

There is also a USB version (costs a bit more) that will work with laptops
and Macs.

Alternatively, there are a few people on this list that I sent scanners to
that aren't using them. Perhaps they could offer to send theirs to someone
that can use it. Or, if someone wants to send me a check to cover this, I
will buy some more and distribute them.
