Hello All:

Thank you Bev for the explanation. However it will be interesting to see if and how Ms. Vargas replies.

Previously in San Diego County, all polling places had their own optical scanners which cut down on over votes but made closing the polling places a bit time consuming. This year, all the ballots were trucked into the ROV and scanned centrally. No, I do not know if they have obtained a high speed central scanner. However, an article in the local paper used 'scanners' instead if 'scanner' which leads me to believe that they may have just lined up most of their old optical scan machines in a back room somewhere (the ROV is part of a large County office/construction/warehouse complex) and started sending ballots through them via some sort of bucket brigade approach.

Thanks, Ed Kennedy

VERY interesting data discovery Art.

A quick look at http://www.verifiedvoting.org/verifier
tells me that San Diego uses Premier (formerly Diebold) equipment,
so presumably they use GEMS and San Diego has somehow figured out
how to get that data out of GEMS.

Could Ed Kennedy or someone please volunteer to contact San Diego and
see how they do it?

It would be nice if it is something that could be used by other
jurisdictions that use GEMS,
including one or two that Philip Stark is working with.
