Did you see the article earlier this year in the Atlantic Monthly in which
they went back to the Jefferson-Burr election (1800) and revisited the
votes cast in the electorial college? They were able to dredge up the
actual ballots that were cast.

(Apropos of nothing, Near where I live Disney has master copies of many of
its movies stored in old railroad tunnels. Because color fades much
faster than black/white, each copy consists of three separate black-white
reels, one reel for each color. But for real longevity, one might
consider text moulded into clay tablets, a la cuniform.)
