I was just snooping at Point of Sale Journal Taping machines.
They retail at around $250.
The assembled units (with i/o) closely couple the receipt printing with
the journal (duh!).
So to build a strong logger looks like a bit of work....

Older ATMs apparently use the same journalling tape off the reciept
printer as well. I'm still looking....
I wonder what is in an airplane's black box. Now that's a real-time
write back requirement.

Flash Disks (USB Keys, Camera Flash Cards), DVD/CD-Roms seem like they
may have better overall characteristics.

I seem to remember some serially loaded mega-memory technology, I'll
take a look.
There are tape drives as well, like DAT - but the cost there starts
going through the roof.
