Re: Shamos Rebuttal, Draft 3

I know Shamos very well, and although I profoundly disagree with him
on many important voting-related issues, I can assure you that this
characterization of him is completely false. He is passionate about
democracy and the democratic process, and he does not have contempt
for me, nor for others on our side of the issues. He honestly
believes (most of) what he writes, though he is not above rhetorical
excess or the occasional phony-but-effective argument. If you want
to talk this way, fine. But I suggest not putting it in archived email.

Also, I am worried that if you allow this attitude and to creep into
your rebuttal, the result will backfire. The rebuttal is important,
but it will only be taken seriously by fairminded people if it sticks
to the facts and avoids personal characterization.

David

P.S. In case anyone is worried, I am not a spy for Shamos. I, too,
want to see his paper powerfully rebutted.
