It seems to me we jumped from "two copies of the ballot"
to "carbons" or "two printers" a little too fast.
Print two identical images of the same ballot on the same
sheet of paper, side by side, portrait mode. If the printer
jams you lose both images and you have to print it again.
The ballot is cast as one sheet of paper into one ballot
box. They're sliced in half at tabulation time.
You could even scan and tabulate both images, and detect
scanner errors, and slice them in half after tabulation.
