Check out escutils -- it's part of the gimp package. It tells me the ink
levels in each cartridge. It's completely text/command-line oriented and
gives a simple percentage for each cartridge.

It seems hard to find the source, but it's there.

Of course, now that I'm trying to use it it has stopped working - it's
very picky about those USB devices. Sigh.
