Do Linux drivers usually have this capability standard? I've mostly
only used inkjets with Windows and Mac machines... which usually come
with cool-looking graphics that show the ink levels (e.g. a cartoon of
the cartridge at various levels). Not that we need a fancy graphic, a
simple query like 'if inkLevel('/dev/usb0')>.5:' would be perfectly

With lasers, it's not hard to manually determine the toner level by
pulling out the cartridge, and tipping it back and forth a couple
times. This has the additional advantage of making sure the toner has
settled to create banding. It's not an exact measure, but you can
easily tell the difference between 3/4 full and 1/4 full from the feel.
