the head of avante made two interesting comments
(avante makes a paper trail and thus has data)

soaries: Is it a good thing that the voting machine manufacturers populate the IEEE standaards panel?

Afer one vendor said: no problemo, avante rep asked to comment.

Avante rep synopsis: avante just joined the council because it was afraid of being left out. Avante feels that traditionally IEEE standards exist for compatibility issues and that is why vendors are invited. However in this case there are no comptiblity issues. instead this is about standards for regualtion and safety. these should be set by NIST not IEEE.

Soaries question about paper trial effectiveness:

Avante Rep: informal observation indicates that about 80% of voters examine their paper ballots. Effectiveness is not known. there are no studies and there ought to be.
