Well, maybe Avante is the strawman.

Anyway, we saw the Avante system at CFP2004 on the 23rd. I didn't actually
see it in action but I wasn't impressed. Karl Auerbach spent quite a bit of
time talking to the Avante and Accupoll folks. We asked if the printout was
read by the machine to verify the printout for a blind voter. The woman
there for Avante said, "yes." We didn't quite believe her. The man there
said that the machine kept track of the selections and would recite the
selections to a blind voter based on what it had stored--not by reading the
paper. Also--if I'm not mistaken--the Avante system does not mark spoiled
ballots. I don't know how it's supposed to work. Spoiled ballots go
through another path to their own receptacle?

Yes.
