Re: Question for list

Lessig is on a list of VIPs whose publicy stated opinions would seem to make them natural allies of open voting. However, when approached, they weren't sufficiently impressed to meet with us ("too busy").

Checking my email, I notice that it was nearly 4 years ago that we contacted Lessig. A lot has happened since then and it is a good time to re-approach some of these people.

  Hi,
Is anyone on this forum connected to Lawrence Lessig? (quoted in the article about Obama above).
Has he been approached about the OVC work and so on? He seems like a natural ally and supporter for us.

    Nothing specific from Google.

    http://www.barackobama.com/issues/technology/

Open Source is not mentioned by name. The agenda is generally toward
openness and transparency, including net neutrality and open
government. But we will have many opportunities to raise the issue.

"Making government data available online in universally accessible formats"

"tapping into the vast and distributed expertise of the American
citizenry to help government make more informed decisions."

"requiring his Cabinet officials to have periodic national online town
hall meetings to answer questions and discuss issues before their
    agencies."

"Obama will appoint the nation's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
to ensure that our government and all its agencies have the right
infrastructure, policies and services for the 21st century. The CTO
will ensure the safety of our networks and will lead an interagency
effort, working with chief technology and chief information officers
of each of the federal agencies, to ensure that they use best-in-class
    technologies and share best practices."

"The CTO will have a specific focus on transparency, by ensuring that
each arm of the federal government makes its records open and
accessible as the E-Government Act requires. The CTO will also focus
on using new technologies to solicit and receive information back from
citizens to improve the functioning of democratic government."

"the government's economic policy-making organizations and councils
will include individuals with backgrounds in our technology industry."

"Obama will make the Veterans Health Administration, the nation's
largest integrated health system, a model in the use of technology to
modernize and improve health care delivery." This system has been
GPLed as OpenVistA. I know some of the people working on that project
    on the Hardhats mailing list.

"Upgrade Education to Meet the Needs of the 21st Century" He may not
know it yet, but that would be One Laptop Per Child's GPLed Sugar
software and projects in the pipeline for Free Textbooks and other
    CC-licensed materials.

"Ensure Competitive Markets...As president, Obama will reinvigorate
    antitrust enforcement" Microsoft?

Then there is this unofficial statement in a discussion group:

    http://my.barackobama.com/page/group/GPLSourceCodeandMediaRightsforDevelopers

    by i.am4barack.obama@gmail.com

We can join in and make our own arguments for FOSS in government.
