Ahh... I misunderstood. I think he was introduced to me as something
like "election commissioner of NYC". I falsely assumed that meant THE
election commissioner, not AN election commissioner. I guess in
retrospect it makes sense that a commissioner would serve on a
commission... but don't some places have just one, e.g. police
commissioner?

Nonetheless, Doug struck me as extremely intelligent and well-informed.
  And a nice guy.
