Another thing I emprirically found to be useful with my elderly legally blind (slightly sighted) gradma was to decorate buttons with distinct shape profiles so they are not all the same. colors even fluorescent ones were not always as easy to distinguish as you would think, shapes are better. and dont place them is tight rows of identical buttons as people with macular degeneration cant distinguish the divisions between them. None of this is scientifc, just hours and hours of successful experimental work to create a house in which a blind person could operate all the machinery without training.
