Bob Kibrick (VVF) forwarded the above technical article about the
AutoMark... it makes for an interesting read if you like to know about
processors and stuff.

One thing that really stands out is that the description seems to
contradict what an ES&S representative told me in person recently in
San Francisco: that the AutoMark *needs no external information* other
than what it reads off of the scanned ballot to produce the
screen-rendered version of the ballot and the synthesized audio. On
page 5 of the PDF, it says, "The DSP code, **specific for each
election**, is loaded by means of extension to the Microsoft Windows
CE operating system developed by ADS for the Intel IXP425 network
processor. [...] Finally, and Ethernet network interface is supported
to allow **loading of ballots** during preparation for an election."
(emphasis mine)

best, Joe
