GOP seeks freeze on voter-outreach spending

San Jose Mercury News

SACRAMENTO - Following reports that Secretary of State Kevin Shelley
directed nearly $500,000 in federal voter outreach money to Democratic
friends and allies, a Republican assemblyman called Friday on state
officials to immediately freeze spending for the program until the
matter can be investigated.

Describing issues raised in the Mercury News as ''disturbing,''
Assemblyman Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks, said $35.1 million should be
withheld until a special hearing next month.
