Alan, that's not why barcodes are used on a
VVPAT. If they are used at all, it is to do a
computerized recount, and avoid the manual
recount for which the VVPAT was intended.

Please separate out the notion of a VVPAT for a
DRE and the ballot printing architecture. Since
they are neatly printed, ballot printers could
use OCR.

Please also note Kevin Shelley's proposal that
the AVVPAT be accessible by speaking from the
printout (via OCR) or by the VVPAT printing
instructions being sent to a speaking device.
It's possible to do the same choice for an
electronic ballot printer.
