Bar CodesDoug, we incorporated the barcode primarily as an accessbility feature. We showed that a blind person could take the ballot from the printer tray and place in in a privacy folder. Then, with the barcode exposed on the edge, to voter can have the barcode scanned and hear the selections read back.

Yes, the barcode would need to be checked to see that it is correct. There are several manual and automated ways to do this. If we use a scanner that takes a picture of the ballot, only one pass would be needed to check the text and the barcode at the same time.

Here's something I wrote on this subject two years ago:

Barcodes have been debated pretty extensively on this forum. Bottom line: they're not an essential feature of an open voting system, or ballot printer architecture, but if someone has a better way for enabling verification for disabled voters, I'd like to see it.

I do not understand how bar codes on the voter verifiable paper audit trail can expedite the manual audit. The auditor would still need to verify that the bar code accurately reflects the voter's choice of candidates. Can anyone explain what I am overlooking?

  Hello All:

I thought this might be of general interest as our proposal includes a bar code similar to what's shown in the article. I was able down load the Qode program to my cell phone and got it to work. Warning, this may require a no-cost registration with the NY Times.
