Bennelong Bicyclist Compulsory voting (yup, even in local government elections) makes such stickers irrelevant here in Oz. How can one run a democracy with it, I constantly ask myself.
March 8, 2011 at 9:17 pm
David Mertz Yeah, voter turnout in the US is terrible (and not mandatory, obviously). This municipal election is unlikely to get 20%. Some of that pattern is deliberate disenfranchisement by the right. But in general we lack a culture of political participation.
March 8, 2011 at 9:59 pm
David Mertz My informal count after looking at the results and finding a rough guess of registered voters is that we got 6.25% turnout.. or *registered* voters, which is probably 60% of those eligible.
March 9, 2011 at 1:16 am
David Mertz My friend Christina Wilson finds better figures, which aren't THAT much more positive than my estimate: "Only 10.75% (221,487 out of 2,060,913) of registered voters participated in yesterday's election in Los Angeles."
March 9, 2011 at 4:02 pm
Bennelong Bicyclist Whereas I was fined (I think it was $120) for failing to vote in a local government election a few years ago. In my defence, it was a ward by-election which received almost no publicity other than a small leaflet in the letterbox which was thrown out along with all the junk mail and advertising crap. And I wasn't feeling very well that day. Nevertheless, I felt ashamed and chastened and paid my fine without complaint.
March 9, 2011 at 4:26 pm
David Mertz @Bennelong: Of course, that's the same amount as the parking ticket one gets while voting at the polling place here in LA :-) (... in fairness, apparently there WAS a little-publicized suspension of ticketing within some number of feet of polling places on this particular election day). Another good argument that bicycling should accompany civic duty.

Meagan Thompson-Mann Great, now I'm going to have nightmares.
January 19, 2011 at 11:15 pm
David Mertz Rangda is the demon queen of the leyaks in Bali, according to traditional Balinese mythology. Terrifying to behold, the child-eating Rangda leads an army of evil witches against the leader of the forces of good - Barong.
