"Race and Sovereignty" - 5th Annual CRS Symposium

Critical Race Studies Program at UCLA School of Law

UCLA School of Law

http://crsonline.wordpress.com/annual-symposium/
Overview:

The Fifth Annual Critical Race Studies Symposium will explore the relationship between race and sovereignty. Sovereignty, like race, has been invoked, understood, and deployed in contradictory ways. Historically, sovereignty has been an important vehicle through which hegemonic power has been enforced, for example, by articulating citizenship as a racial project rooted in the power to exclude. Sovereignty has also been an important tool of anti-colonial resistance crucial to liberatory struggles of people of color in the U.S. and worldwide. Race shares this complex dimension, serving as both a technology of oppression and a vehicle for resistance to that oppression.

Despite these parallels, race and sovereignty have, for the most part, been engaged as separate and mutually exclusive projects: sovereignty has primarily been linked to the struggles of Native Americans and other indigenous peoples, while the struggles of other people of color have largely been cast through a standard anti-racist narrative of citizenship and inclusion. The symposium proposes, instead, to examine how race and sovereignty intersect and are mutually constitutive, even as important distinctions remain. We propose to examine how race enters into concepts of sovereignty and how sovereignty enters into concepts of race.

Among the questions to be considered are the following:

• How has the exercise of national sovereignty explicitly and implicitly relied upon race as a criterion of membership?

• How might a sovereignty framework provide a counter-narrative to the story of inclusion often associated with civil rights?

• How can a comparative racial analysis contribute to understanding the possibilities and limits of sovereignty?

• How has race influenced the cognizability of claims to sovereignty?

• Does the assertion of sovereignty by oppressed peoples stand subject to the same or similar critiques of the exercise of sovereign power by dominant national formations?

Please forward proposals and questions to crssymposium@law.ucla.edu and any questions regarding the symposium logistics to crs@law.ucla.edu

One year on from their award-winning run of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, The Porters of Hellsgate open their fifth season (Feb 20th) with the most famous Greek Tragedy, Sophocles’ Oedipus the Tyrant (in a world premiere translation by company member Jamey Hecht, PhD). Combining dance, eclectic costuming, and Hecht’s spirited translation, The Porters of Hellsgate aim to thrill audiences with this four-week run of Sophocles’ uncanny drama.

A mysterious plague has come to Thebes. Corpses burn all night, pregnant women can’t give birth, crops fail, cattle die, and the survivors are exhausted. Helpless, the Theban people turn to their beloved king Oedipus—whose own authority, family, and very identity are broken open in a relentless search for the truth that brings him down from brilliant ruler to homeless scapegoat within the span of ninety minutes.

Oedipus the Tyrant Show Dates/Times:

Friday, March 11, 8pm
Saturday, March 12, 7pm
Saturday, March 12, 10pm

The Porters of Hellsgate Theatre Company was founded in 2006 by Edward Castuera, Jack Leahy and Charles Pasternak. Their inaugural production of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar opened at the end of that year. Since then the Porters have produced ten more of Shakespeare’s plays: Twelfth Night ('07), King Richard III ('07), Titus Andronicus ('07), Two Gentlemen of Verona ('07/'08), Much Ado About Nothing ('08), Macbeth ('08), Love's Labour's Lost ('08), King Richard II ('09), Hamlet ('10), and The Comedy of Errors (‘10), as well as Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead ('10, in rep. with Hamlet) and an original work, Deity Clutch (‘10), by Associate Artistic Director Gus Krieger. In 2010, Artistic Director Charles Pasternak was awarded “Shakespeare Performance of the Year” by StageSceneLA for his performance in the title role of Hamlet (which also received a “GO!” from the LA Weekly), directed by Associate Artistic Director Thomas Bigley (also awarded, earning “Outstanding Direction of a Drama”). The company’s mission is to bring powerful productions of both classic and new works to the Los Angeles community.

Cirque Berzerk's big top summer show

Cirque Berzerk
June 18, 2009 at 11:30 pm - July 6, 2009 at 2:30 am
Los Angeles State Historic Park (1245 N. Spring St. (downtown by Chinatown Metro stop))
Cirque Berzerk Returns to Downtown LA
For Seven Performances per Weekend
At Los Angeles State Historic Park
June 18 – July 5, 2009

Parental discretion is advised.

“Equal parts trippy and sinister, Cirque Berzerk seems like the sort of phantasmagoric
spectacle Tim Burton would dream up, if he quit filmmaking to join the circus.”
Los Angeles Times, July 2008

Following the amazing success of last year’s completely sold-out and held-over engagement, Cirque Berzerk, a wild, sexy, decadent and demented alternative circus that isn’t exactly for kids makes its triumphant return to downtown Los Angeles for an exclusive engagement debuting June 18, 2009, running through 4th of July weekend.

As Los Angeles’ only established circus troupe, Cirque Berzerk promises an even more twisted big top experience than ever before, adding several new acts under an even bigger big top. The 35-artist troupe is a tight-knit “family” of professional performers and musicians. Instead of typical circus fare emphasizing live animal acts and wholesome family fun, Cirque Berzerk features jaw-dropping acrobatics, stunning male and female aerialists, sexy, fiery burlesque dancers, gothic stilt walkers, punk rock clowns, psychedelic vaudevillian tomfoolery, and one very voluptuous contortionist.

Cirque Berzerk performs cutting-edge choreography by Neal Everett set to an entirely original live musical score composed by Cirque Berzerk co-founder Kevin Bourque. “Stylistically, we’re a little grungier, darker, rougher and more theatrical than a typical circus,” says Bourque’s wife and co-founder Suzanne Bernel. Attendees from last year’s show described it as a “circus on acid,” “French burlesque meets ‘Sweeney Todd’ meets Cirque du Soliel” and “P.T. Barnum’s worst nightmare.”

To accommodate the anticipated crowds, Cirque Berzerk has commissioned and imported a massive custom-built new big top tent from Italy, which can accommodate over 1,500 spellbound guests. Cirque Berzerk’s three-weekend engagement begins Thursday, June 18, 2009 - with one performance each Thursday at 8:30pm, two shows Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 and 10:00pm and two shows every Sunday at 5:00pm and 8:00pm - scheduled to run through Sunday, July 5, 2009.

To get into the spirit of the evening, revelers are encouraged to arrive early before the show to dine (and drink with valid ID) picnic-style around the big top - bring your own or purchase dinner on-site - and enjoy interactive carnival-themed attractions before entering into a whole new big top ‘surreality.’ After the nightly performances, the audience is invited to party with the Cirque Berzerk circus troupe and enjoy a live performance by Vaud & The Villains at the nightly post-show party held in the “The Berzerk Lounge,” a club-like atmosphere adjacent to the big top that will enable guests to continue their Cirque Berzerk experience well into the night.

Cirque Berzerk takes place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, 1245 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Tickets now on sale, with ticket prices ranging between $25 and $80. For more information and for online ticketing, please visit http://www.cirqueberzerk.com

What if we all cared enough to vote?

Not just 54% of us, but 100% of us?

What if we cared as much on Nov. 5th as we care on Nov. 4th?

What if we cared all of the time the way we care some of the time?

What if we cared when it was inconvenient as much as we care when it’s convenient?

Would your community be a better place?

Would our country be a better place?

Would our world be a better place?

We think so, too.

Celebrate the election today by coming into any Starbucks and we’ll proudly give you a tall cup of brewed coffee. On us.

Time is fast approaching for the annual Los Angeles Decompression party!

We have had more submissions for Art, Camps, Installations, stages, and performers than EVER BEFORE!. You guys rock!

Before we get to the list everyone is dying to see, a few things.

First, the event will be held in a BRAND NEW location this year. No more partying on the streets, now we have acres of beautiful lawn all with the amazing view of downtown we have always had.

The location is at:

Los Angeles State Historical Park
1245 N. Spring Street, 90012

We are very grateful to the State Park Rangers for allowing us to use their wonderful location. When you see them around, tell them thanks! They have been truly great to work with.

Time: The festivities will start at Noon and end at Midnight.

Cost: Entrance to the event is

$10 in costume or with a Metro Rail pass!

$20 in street clothes.

(Children under 12 are FREE!)

There will be alcohol available on site this year (woo!) as well as food vendors. You are welcome to bring your own food, but we can not allow alcohol in the park outside of the approved areas, so please do not bring it. We are being asked to check for alcohol and weapons as you enter. Please be prepared for this at the gate so we can keep the line moving.

Parking:

On Site and Secure Parking available at the North end of the park off Baker for $10, so please CARPOOL. Or ride the Metro Rail to the China Town exit and enter at the South end of the park off Spring St.

VOLUNTEER! We need you! Email volunteers@la-burningman.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and participate! Have time Friday, the day of the event or Sunday? Let us know!

We are a No Glow Stick event. In keeping with our green initiatives, we ask that you leave the glow sticks at home. They only fill up our landfills with materials that never decompose. Instead, bring reusable lights, like LEDs or EL Wire.

For the first time we will have a chapel. You too can get married at Decompression! Whether for real or just to your playa partner, you can make the moment last a lifetime.

We are pleased to present the following acts, art, camps, cars and more!!!!!
